Aero-TV: CubCrafters Shows off New Carbon Cub UL

Model Debuts Alongside 160-Hp Rotax 916 iS

In a recent partnership, CubCrafters and Rotax together unveiled their new and improved designs: the Carbon Cub UL powered by the 160 hp Rotax 916 iS. The aircraft quickly took the stage for its simplicity, stability, and exceptional performance.

The Carbon Cub UL began as a method for CubCrafters to further invest in the somewhat untapped international market. It falls under European ultralight standards, weighing in at 860 lbs empty and having a maximum takeoff weight of 1320 lbs.

Though it was initially aimed at overseas customers, the Carbon Cub UL has already become a massive worldwide hit. It is based primarily on CubCrafters’s vastly popular Carbon Cub SS model, which has consistently topped the chart for American light-sport sales.

The SS airframe was tweaked to add additional appeal. CubCrafters was able to lighten the airframe by over 30 lbs, simplify its systems, and utilize modern composite materials for a durable structure. However, despite the UL’s low weight, it still produces impressive performance. The aircraft can reach cruise speeds of up to145 mph burning just around 8.2 gallons per hour.

“We’re just pushing forward with doing what CubCrafters does best,” expressed Brad Damm, VP of CubCrafters, “make really fun airplanes that are super capable in the backcountry.”

The UL was also the launch partner for Rotax’s latest poster child, the 916 iS. This is a 160hp, turbocharged, four-stroke piston engine built for efficiency and flexibility.
