Former 'Bridesmaid' Gets Her Own New Department

The FAA has named Lynne Osmus as Assistant Administrator for the newly created office of Internal Security and Hazardous Materials.

Osmus heads a team of 450 employees that oversees the FAA’s hazardous materials program, personnel and contractor security investigations, and security for FAA facilities. The office of Internal Security and Hazardous Materials is also the FAA’s liaison to the Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration.

"Our mission is to provide air travelers the highest level of safety. The creation of this new FAA office also reflects a top priority to protect our employees and facilities, and to ensure a coordinated, effective program to keep our skies safe," said Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta.

"Lynne’s strong experience handling security issues makes her a natural fit for this critical position," said FAA Administrator Marion C. Blakey.

Osmus joined the FAA in 1979 and served most recently as a senior advisor to the Deputy Administrator coordinating security issues between the FAA and the TSA. Osmus has held several top-level positions during her FAA career including Deputy Associate Administrator for Civil Aviation Security; Director of the FAA’s Brussels, Belgium office; and Chief of Staff to former FAA Administrators David Hinson and Jane Garvey. Osmus graduated with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1976.
