Electra Flies NASA Chief Bill Nelson Aboard Goldfinch Prototype

First Agency Head To Fly On Next-Gen AAM Aircraft

Electra.aero announced it has flown NASA Administrator Bill Nelson aboard its hybrid-electric EL2 Goldfinch Ultra-Short prototype aircraft to demonstrate its unique ability to take off and land in a soccer field-sized space that will make sustainable point-to-point travel a reality.

The occasion also represented the first ever for a U.S. government agency head no a next-gen Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft.

At the controls for the 24-minute flight was Cody Allee, Electra’s Chief Test Pilot on December 8, departing from Electra’s headquarters at Manassas Regional Airport (KHEF). The aircraft showcased its ultra-short capabilities by performing a series of takeoffs and landings with only 150 feet of ground roll made possible by Electra’s proprietary blown-lift technology.

The flight also demonstrated both hybrid-electric and battery-only operations with an acoustic signature of just 55dB at 500 feet, or the equivalent of normal conversation.

The EL2 Goldfinch is the testbed for Electra’s distributed electric propulsion system and blown-lift technology, which is being scaled up for the company’s nine-passenger EL9 Ultra Short aircraft.

Nelson said, “Flying aboard this new technology is an inspiring example of how innovation and determination can redefine what’s possible in aviation. Advancements in hybrid-electric flight are a critical part of the aviation industry’s transformation toward cleaner, quieter, and more accessible air transportation.”
