Iowa Senate Candidate Fatally Injured In Aviation Accident

Dr. Doug Butzier Had Been Running As A Libertarian

An emergency room physician running for a U.S. Senate seat in Iowa as a Libertarian has been fatally injured in an aviation accident near Dubuque Regional Airport.

FAA spokesperson Lynn Lunsford said Dr. Douglas Butzier was flying a Piper PA-46 that went down Monday night at about 2300 local time while on approach to the airport. The plane impacted terrain about a mile short of the runway, according to Lunsford.

USA Today reports that, according to Lunsford, Dr. Butzier had departed from Ankeny Regional Airport about an hour before the accident. The candidate was the only person on board the plane.

Fox News reports that Butzier had been running well behind Republican State Senator Joni Ernst and Democratic U.S. Representative Bruce Braley in the race. Both released statements Tuesday expressing sadness at his death in the accident.
