Illinois Ultralight & Light Sport Aviation Symposium Canceled

Pandemic Concerns Lead to 2nd Cancellation of Conference

The upcoming Ultralight and Light Sport Safety Symposium has been canceled, according to an official communique from its sponsoring body, the Illinois Ultralight Advisory Council.

The organization has decided that ahead of a projected rise in COVID-19 cases, their safety-themed event would be better off postponed until the pandemic threat is sufficiently reduced.

"With the continuing threat of COVID-19 cases, and the extra threat from the variants, we felt that it was prudent to cancel the event for safety reasons. We considered moving it to later in the year, but for many reasons we feel that it would be better to simply once again skip the event for this year and concentrate on a 2023 event to be held on the last Saturday in February, as we have done for the past 40 years," said IUAC official Vickie Betts.

"By then, we hope that normal activities in an indoor environment should again be safe, our sponsors will have recovered from the current depressed aviation economy, and the many enthusiasts who have faithfully attended our past events should be eager to participate," she said in closing.

The symposium will not be transitioning to a web-only conference. It's an unfortunate change, as the Illinois pilot community has enjoyed the chance to escape the late winter weather and begin planning their spring flying activities, especially with FAA Wings credit up for grabs. The 2020 event saw a $7 breakfast followed by presentations on everything LSA and Ultralight from wooden propeller inspection to ATC interaction tips for light aircraft.
