Drone Assists In Rescue Of Stranded Mountaineer In The Himalayas

Helped Direct Sherpa Rescuers To The Injured Climber

A Scottish mountaineer who had climbed solo to the 26,401-foot summit of Broad Peak in the Himalayas was rescued with the assistance of a drone after he fell while descending the mountain.

The BBC reports that Aberneed-born Rick Allen was knocked unconscious by the fall earlier this month, suffering cuts and frostbite. His rucksack was spotted by a base camp cook some 36 hours after he fell.

A Polish climber who was using his drone to document his brother's attempt to ski down K2. He flew his aircraft over Broad Peak to confirm that the person on the mountainside was Allen, and then help lead Sherpa rescuers to him to affect the rescue.

After returning to Scotland, Allen praised the actions of the Polish brothers, calling them "smart, young guys."

The video captured by the drone was released by brothers Bartek and Andrzej Bargiel with Allen's blessing.
