Classic Aero-TV: Jabiru's New J170-D - An Upgraded and Fine-tuned LSA

From 2016 (YouTube Version): The Airplane From Down Under Is A Proven Trainer…

Jabiru was one of the early light sport aircraft (LSA) brought into the U.S.A. when the sport pilot rules were initiated in 2004. They have long been popular for pilot training in Australia, and while at the Deland Sport Aviation Showcase 2016, ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, found out more about a new model of Jabiru trainer that has been recently introduced to the U.S.

Tom met up with Pete Krotje, who is the president of Jabiru North America which is located in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Krotje says the new Jabiru model is referred to as the J170-D and is a highly upgraded version of the original J170. The airplane is designed with flight training in mind, which makes sense because Jabiru airplanes train a high percentage of new pilots in Australia.

The J170-D is certificated as a special light sport aircraft, which means it is sport pilot eligible, but it is widely used in other countries for training pilots at various certificate levels. In the U.S., it can also be used for pilot training above that of sport pilot level.

In the video, you see lots of detail about the airplane as Krotje talks about its features. Krotje describes the various features of the airplane and discusses its economical performance. It’s a good looking airplane with lots of visibility that looks like it would make a great trainer plane.
