One-Third Scale B-17G Ready For Flight Testing

'Bally Bomber' Receives Flight Certification From the FAA

A 17 year labor of love is about to reach a significant milestone in Dixon, IL. A one-third scale B-17G built by Jack Bally has been certified by the FAA, and is ready for flight testing.

The Bally Bomber was built by scaling up plans for a 1/9-scale RC model. But this is no RC aircraft. It will be flown by a person sitting inside the aircraft.

The Bally Bomber has a wingspan of 34' 7" and is powered by four Hirth 3002 two-stroke engines. Her empty weight is 1,800 pounds.

Builder Jack Bally was handed an airworthiness certificate on Monday, according to a post on Facebook.

Taxi tests were conducted earlier this month, and the next step is a first flight. Bally has not set a date for that milestone. We wish him all the best in getting his dream machine in the air.
