And now for something completely weird...

South Florida absorbent product manufacturer to take on Hurricane Ivan with a 747

Peter Cordani, a resident of Jupiter (FL) and president of Dyn-O-Mat, an absorbent mat manufacturer, wants to take on Hurricane Ivan with a Boeing 747.

His plan? To try to knock down Ivan from Category 5 to anything lower, by flying the heavy jet to the edge of the storm and dumping thousands of pounds of absorbent material into it. No, that's not a typo. That's what he's planning to do.

The material is a powder that, according to Cordani, absorbs 3,000 to 4,000 times its weight in liquid. Cordani's company uses the material to produce products such as mats for mechanics. Cordani told the Associated Press that he believes that his product, which he calls SK1000, would result in a shearing action and subsequent cooling of the storm by some 15 degrees.

His team has been working on this project for five years, and includes the likes of astronauts Edgar Mitchell and Scott MacLeod. At press time, reports were that Cordani was attempting to lease a cargo configured 747 from Evergreen Aviation.
