FAA Grants S-92 Engine Inlet Barrier Filter FAA STC Approval To Aerometals

Company Says Device Will Reduce FOD And Limit Salt Intrusion

After exhaustive testing and certification scrutiny, aerospace manufacturing and FAA Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) innovator Aerometals, has received an engine Inlet Barrier Filter (IBF) FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for the Sikorsky S-92 transport category helicopter.  This filter technology will not only substantially reduce foreign object damage and engine compressor erosion, but will also significantly limit salt nuclei ingestion during offshore operations.

Aerometals design engineers utilized the latest generation Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling software to maximize the filter design efficiencies and predictability.  This technology employs high-speed computer modeling for turbulence mitigation, shape design, and optimization of the overall filter performance and protection characteristics. Inlet barrier filters have been proven to extend power margins between overhaul intervals, reduce the number of premature engine removals, and prevent aircraft downtime due to turbine engine damage from particle ingestion.

Aerometals continues to develop inlet barrier filter options for helicopter turbine engines and currently offers STC IBF kits for Bell 206A, B/BIII, 206L, 407, Airbus AS350 Series, EC120, H130, H135, MD 500, 600, and the Sikorsky S-76 A+, A++, C, C+ model type helicopters.
