Philippines Airport Siege

Two Dead After Takeover Of Manila Airport Tower

Philippine security forces stormed the control tower at Manila's international airport early Saturday, killing two men who had taken over there. One of the dead is the former head of the Philippine Air Transport Office.

It started just before midnight Friday, local time. Authorities say Panfilo Villaruel and a dozen armed bodyguards took over the control tower and went on live radio. Sometime after that, security forces shot their way into the tower.

Villaruel said over live local radio, "We are being killed here." Gunfire and groans from the wounded could be heard in the background. Villaruel said on the radio, "We surrender." Earlier he told a local radio station that he was fed up with government corruption.

He said he was representing Filipinos who were scared to speak up. Now that the siege is over, the general manager of Ninoy Aquino International says the airport is taking international arrivals again.
