Crisis In The Air Between Israel And Turkey

Tiff Over Security Issues

In a country where you need all the friends you can get, flying to see them is suddenly much more difficult.

Israel has suspended flights of its flagship carrier, El Al, to and from the Turkish capital of Istanbul. This, in a reported dispute with Turkey over aviation security. Specifically, according to the Israeli business publication Globes, the Turks have a problem with armed Israeli security agents posted inside their airports.

Given the escalating dispute, which now involves Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, El Al canceled all flights to Istanbul until at least Wednesday. But even then, airline executives said they weren't sure flights would resume, raising the spectre of a long-running dispute between Israel and Turkey.
