British Authorities Issue Report On October Near-Miss

Calling it a "deeply disturbing incident," British civil aviation authorities issued their report this week on a near-miss involving a Dash-8 and two RAF Hawks.

It happened over the town of Burrow Head near the Solway Firth on October 27th. The UK's AirProx Board (Aircraft Proximity) stated the three aircraft came within 200-feet of colliding and blamed the incident on the Dash-8 pilots' inability to spot the oncoming traffic.

By the time the Hawk pilots spotted the Dash-8, it was too late to take evasive action, according to the AirProx Board. The Dash-8 flew directly over the Hawks with only about 200 feet to spare.

The incident falls into what the board calls Risk Category A, the closest of near-misses where there was a "high" risk of collision. It was the only one of last year's incidents studied by the board to involve a commercial passenger aircraft. In all, there were 207 near misses reported over the UK in 2004. About a third of them were Category A.
