Airborne 02.07.20: Astro-Record!, BGen Charles McGee!, B-29 Doc

Setting a record for the longest single spaceflight in history by a woman, NASA astronaut Christina Koch, Soyuz Commander Alexander Skvortsov of Roscosmos and Luca Parmitano of ESA landed on Earth in Kazakhstan, this week.

The trio departed the International Space Station in their Soyuz MS-13 spacecraft just a few hours before. For Parmitano and Skvortsov, this landing completed a 201-day stay in space, 3,216 orbits of Earth and a journey of 85.2 million miles. Koch’s first journey into space became a 328-day mission in which she orbited Earth 5,248 times, a journey of 139 million miles, roughly the equivalent of 291 trips to the Moon and back. Few honors were better deserved as Tuskegee Airman, Col. Charles McGee became a Brigadier General just a few weeks after celebrating his 100th Birthday. Just a few days ago, he found himself in the Oval Office at the White House being promoted by President Donald Trump. McGee’s successes started early on in his career, when on June 30, 1943, he earned his pilot’s wings as one of the Tuskegee Airmen, the decorated unit of African American Airmen famous for not only their combat successes, but the impact they had on the cultural shift in the military. It should be quite the sight! B-29 Doc, one of only two remaining B-29 Superfortresses still flying today, will participate in the 2020 Arsenal of Democracy Flyover in Washington, D.C., May 7-8, 2020. The event commemorates the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and will include more than 20 different types of vintage military aircraft. An estimated 100 World War II-era aircraft will fly in sequenced warbird formations representing the war’s major battles, from the Battle of Britain through the final air missions in Japan. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
