U.S. Airlines Hanging Out The 'Help Wanted' Signs Again

Many Carriers Hiring After Years Of Layoffs

U.S. airlines have been adding employees in recent months after years of cuts that began shortly after September 11, 2001.

The Dallas Morning News reports that in that area, Southwest and American have added more than 8,000 employees in the 12 months that ended in November, 2015, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The BTS counts two part-time workers as one FTE.

While Southwest has boated that it has never cut employees' pay or gone through a layoff, American eliminated 10 percent of its workforce after declaring bankruptcy four year ago. The paper reports that the trend bottomed out in 2013, and in 2014, American added 1,100 new full-time positions. After the merger, they showed a net gain of 5,000 FTEs.

The reason for the hiring trend at AA is record profits reported in 2015.

Southwest, meanwhile, reported that it added nearly 3,300 Full Time Equivalent positions last year.
