Van's Rolls Out Illustrational RV-7

Every Panel, Part, and Piece Shown on Tonky Kirk's Detailed 777RV

Van's brought an eye-catcher to Sun 'n Fun this year, a fun look at all the parts that go into the exterior of the average Van's aircraft.

Tony Kirk's work provides an easy, clear method to visualize all the work that goes into building an RV at home, with detailing on all the skins, panels, and buttons labeled according to their part name. Listening in on passing Sun 'n Fun attendees was interesting - some felt the relative simplicity was heartening, while others felt it a daunting task to assemble a plane all on their own.

With each piece numbered and named, it takes a keen eye to pick up on tiny details like the light grey lettering at the base of the rudder reading "SAND-PRIME SAND-PRIME-FILL PINHOLES-SAND-PRIME-REPEAT". The RV-7 is a capable one, too, powered by a Lycoming IO-375. In his installation, the combo is good for a 1,095-lb empty weight with more than 700 lbs of useful load. A fun plane indeed.
