2022 Paper Airplane Champions Crowned

Redbull’s Paper Wings Championship Crowns New Champs For 2022

Last week, on 14 May 2022, the 2022 RedBull Paper Wings World Finals concluded in Hangar-7, Salzburg, Austria. The event began on Friday the 13th with preliminary elimination rounds for longest airtime and distance, then elimination for aerobatics, yes, you read that correctly paper airplane aerobatics on Saturday morning, with the Superfinals later that day.

Top 3 finishers for longest distance (200ft Lazar Krstic, Serbia; 187ft Yicheng Sun, Great Britain; 180ft Abduaziz Omonillaev, Uzbekistan). In the longest airtime division (14.86s Rana Muhammad Usman Saeed, Pakistan; 12.99s Esteban Neira, Chile; 12.29s Dimitri Dimitrev, Moldova). Aerobatics (46 points Seunghoon Lee, Korea; 42 points Seng Fatt Beh, Taipei; 41 points Taiga Kimura, Japan).

The longest distance and longest airtime both has a competing pool of 15 whereas, the aerobatic division was 19 deep.

The contest rules are straightforward. The singular sheet of ‘official’ paper handed out on-site may be modified by folding only. No ripping, gluing, stapling or ballasting allowed. Two trials permitted; best distance wins as measured by laser!

Longest distance counts in seconds from the moment the airplane launches from hand until touchdown. The aerobatic division is a little looser; premade airplanes, no propulsion, no special effects, no remote control, and supporting material used should not influence flight after launch.

The Redbull Paper Wings competition was first held in 2006, under rules developed by the Paper Aircraft Association.

Yes, there is such a thing!
