Staffs Adjusted In Delta/US Airways Slot Swap

LaGuardia To See Net Increase in Jobs During 2012

The recently announced trade of takeoff and landing slots at New York LaGuardia and Washington Reagan National Airports by US Airways and Delta has reduced the number of US Airways flights operating at LaGuardia. As might be expected, the airline says it will trim employment there to match.

TheStreet.com reports the carrier has made a filing with the New York State Department of Labor, announcing that 299 customer service agents and fleet service workers will be laid off in two groups, one on March 25 and the rest on July 11, 2012. US Airways Spokeswoman Michelle Mohr adds, "As a result of the transaction, which has been in the works for years, we are faced with the tough decision to eliminate some jobs at LaGuardia."

The good news - Delta, which gets more slots at LaGuardia, says it will needs as many as 700 more employees at LaGuardia, and US Airways is expected to announce the addition of some jobs at Reagan National sometime after the first of the year, to match its increased presence there.

The Street also notes that employment at Piedmont Airlines, US Airways' regional codeshare partner based in Maryland, does not expect any layoffs during the transition.
