Aero-Oops #1: Student Pilot v. Andrews AFB

In the "more news GA didn't need" department, we have the story of a pilot who apparently got his airports mixed up in an area where such mix-ups tend to be viewed quite negatively. A student pilot is reported to have landed his helicopter at Andrews AFB and NOT Indian Head Airport, some 10 miles or so away. Andrews, of course, is the home of Air Force One and the 89th Airlift Wing... so unannounced civilian landings tend to raise a fuss.

The landing reportedly occurred about 1700, Saturday, and was met "immediately" by security personnel. The pilot carried a Swiss passport and other ID, and claimed to have gotten lost while enroute to a nearby civilian field. For the moment, that's all this incident appears to be, though the FBI and the USAF Office of Special investigation have been called in to review the matter... and the FAA can't be far behind.

Though it seems an innocent (if dumb) mistake, the general media have already seized upon this incident to relate it to the "numerous" transgressions they claim to have taken place near Camp David and the District of Columbia and add to the black eye GA keeps getting over such reports.
