First Flight of Royal Canadian Air Force CH-146C MKII Griffon Helicopter

Modifications Extend Griffon Fleet Lifetime to 2039

Bell Textron Canada Ltd. announced that the first flight of one of the newly modernized CH-146 MK II Griffon helicopters was successful. 

The modernization was carried out under the Griffon Limited Life Extension project which awarded the In-Service Support contract to Bell to perform the mods that will help sustain the Griffon fleet through 2039. The modifications will be made to the aircraft’s engines, sensor and avionics systems, and cockpit displays. Pending military approval, the first deliveries to the Canadian government of the upgraded helicopters is expected to occur in 2026.

The Griffon is a variant of the Bell 412EP used extensively by militaries around the world. Within Canada the fleet is employed extensively for Search and Rescue services and first responder support. The Royal Canadian Air Force utilizes it for multiple mission profiles including provision of global humanitarian relief in support of the United Nations and Reassurance measures under NATO. The CH-146 Griffon fleet last year surpassed the half-million flight hour mark.
