Chute Pull Saves Cirrus Pilot In U.K.

Airplane Came Down In The Garden Of A Home In Gloucestershire

A 76-year-old Cirrus pilot suffered only minor injuries after the plane he was flying developed an unspecified problem which led him to deploy the emergency parachute system.

The plane came down in the rear garden of a private home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in the U.K. about 2.5 miles from Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton, according to a report from the BBC. The pilot was reportedly intending to land at Gloucestershire Airport when the accident occurred.

Witnesses said they "heard a big, loud noise," and that the plane was spinning under the canopy. After it landed near the house, two witnesses to the incident helped the pilot from the plane. David Shatford had been watching from a scaffolding on a nearby house where he was working as the plane came down. He told the BBC "he (the pilot) was all shook up an didn't talk much."

Houses near the accident scene were evacuated as a precaution. The pilot, who was not identified, was reportedly from London.
