Long Island Man Finds Airplane Part In His Back Yard

Residence Located Between LaGuardia And JFK Airports

A piece of sheet metal about one foot square was recovered from the back yard of a home on Long Island last Tuesday.

The home belongs to 52-year-old Lee Ackerman, who found the item in a fern behind his home after walking his dog. NBC New York reports that the item appears to be a landing gear maintenance placard that had been aboard an Airbus A380.

Ackerman told Newsday that "we have so many flights going overhead and, you know, things fall off airplanes now and then."

The part, which shows a diagram and maintenance instruction for the main landing gear on an A380, was recovered by Nassau (NY) County police.
