NAA Honors Largest Skydive & Canopy Records

NAA Honors Largest Heads-Up Skydive And Night Canopy World Records

Earlier this month, following a two-year COVID-induced absence, the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), official record keeper for U.S. Aviation, out of a pool of 234 records, honored two very memorable record-setting events: the largest head-up formation (HUF) skydive and the largest canopy formation at night (CFN). On the international level, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) recognized and ratified these and other records.

The world record for largest HUF went to a team that did a 84-way jump on 26 July 2019 at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, Illinois.

Two of the organizers Amy Chmelecki and Sara Curtis and 8 other women rounded out the team on that day’s jump.

HUF involves staying oriented in the vertical axis with the head being upright, a position some refer to as sit-flying, and is one of the more advanced positions.

The 36-way CFN occurred on 14 March 2019, where each canopy formation pilot aka ‘CRW Dog’ with their own PD Lightning chute, formed up in a diamond stack, and for added effect, all sported LED lighting, with pyrotechnics on the outside of the lower portion of the diamond.

Chris Gay, the organizer for this event holds other skydiving records, including a 100-way daytime canopy formation in 2007!

FIA, formed in France in 1904, is a non-profit federation of motoring organizations and the governing body of world motor sport.
