Airline Pilot Hiring - August 2005 Hiring Summary

According to AIR, Inc., airlines hired 910 pilots in August, bringing the year-to-date total to 7,353 - an increase of more than 680 new pilot jobs over this time last year. The National carriers continued strong in August hiring 301 pilots, followed by the Majors with 217, and the Jet Operators finished in third, hiring 149 new pilots for the month. AIR, Inc. estimates that more than 10,000 new pilot jobs will be created in 2005!

Delta Air Lines announced that it would downsizing Cincinnati operations by 26% and cutting 1,000 jobs by December 2005. Daily departures will reduced from 600 to 445. "It sounds like they're still trying to avoid Chapter 11, even at this late date," said Calyon Securities analyst Ray Neidl. Cincinnati is Delta's second-largest hub, behind Atlanta.

Northwest Airlines' (NWA) mechanics, aircraft cleaners, and ramp workers honored their strike threat at 11:01 p.m. on August 19. The NWA MEC did not authorize pilots to participate in a sympathy strike. NWA is replacing the workers using management, veteran technicians, and contract/vendor mechanics to meet flight needs.

AIR, Inc.'s Los Angeles, CA Job Fair is set for September 17. Airlines that have signed on to attend include Majors: Continental, JetBlue, Southwest; Nationals: AirNet, American Eagle, Mesa, Pinnacle , SkyWest; Jet / Non-Jet Operators: AmeriJet, Gulfstream Int'l ; Fractionals: Avantair, Bombardier Flexjet, CitationShares; Foreign: China Airlines; Others: CAE Simuflight, CTSC.
