Dubai International Airport Closed Briefly Due To Drone Scare

Operations Halted For Just Under Half An Hour

One of the world's busiest airports was shut down for about half an hour Friday due to "suspected drone activity".

Dubai International Airport put a ground stop on departing flights for about 30 minutes from 10:13 to 10:45 due to the incident. Incoming flights were not diverted and landed normally, according to the New York Times. It was not reported whether a drone was actually sighted, and at about 10:45 the airport posted on Twitter that normal operations had resumed.

“Dubai Airports has worked closely with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the safety of airport operations is maintained at all times and to minimize any inconvenience to our customers,” the airport said on its social media account.

The Dubai government does not have a lot of regulations about flying drones near an airport. Such flights are forbidden "near, around and over airports", and a drone operator must hold a certificate to fly his or her aircraft from the General Civil Aviation Authority in the UAE.
