Sporty’s Announces 2025 Richard Collins Writing Prize

Judged For Essay On ‘My Most Memorable Flight’

Sporty’s and the Richard Collins Family announced the submission period for the 2025 Richard Collins Writing Prize for Young Pilots has opened, and essays will be accepted through March 7, 2025. The winners will be announced in April, with first place receiving $5,000 and $2,500 for second place.

The prize is open to pilots or student pilots up to the age of 24. The piece must be original, not previously published, and no longer than 1,500 words. The topic should be “my most memorable flight.” In addition, young pilots are required to submit a 100-word biography to accompany the article.

The first- and second-place articles will be published in Air Facts, the publication founded by Richard Collins’ father, Leighton, in 1938 and which was relaunched in 2011 as an online magazine.

The pieces will be judged by a panel of three: Richard Collins, Jr., Amy Laboda, and J. Mac McClellan. Further details are available at the Air Facts website (see link below).

John Zimmerman, President of Sporty’s, said, “Since launching this contest in 2019, the Collins Prize has encouraged hundreds of young pilots to reflect upon their aviation experiences and pursue their passion for writing. We’re honored to celebrate Richard’s legacy with this inspiring writing contest.”
