NTSB Final Report: Progressive Aerodyne Searey

Pilot’s Failure To Properly Configure The Landing Gear Before Performing A Water Landing

Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General aviation - Personal

Analysis: The pilot of the amphibious light sport airplane reported that during a water landing, he did not configure the landing gear to a retracted position, and the airplane touched down in the water with the landing gear extended. Subsequently, the airplane nosed over and sustained substantial damage to the fuselage.

The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings: The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be -- The pilot’s failure to properly configure the landing gear before performing a water landing.
