Jet Fuel Shortage in Sydney

Localized Shortage Begets Rationing

The Sydney, Australia Joint User Hydrant Installation began rationing jet fuel Thursday, due to a production shortfall that was complicated by delivery delays, traced to a refinery problem at Shell.

How bad is it? The anticipated 48-hour rationing period is in place because supplies are at just 35% of the levels they need.

Just what type of rationing was in place, was not clarified. Clearly, getting 35% of the fuel one needed for a given flight, was not a good strategy...

Flights are leaving Sydney nearly on schedule, but intermediate stops to refuel are slowing the system; some flights have had major delays.

A tanker is due to arrive in Sydney's Botany Bay Thursday night; the problem should be alleviated by mid-day Saturday, or sooner.

CASA said there was no flight-safety threat. There was no talk of any fuel contamination, just shortage.
