President Trump Removes Barriers To Supersonic Flight

Stimulating Innovation, Reinvigorating R&D, Promoting Int’l Engagement

President Donald Trump issued an executive order on June 6 that, among other things, directs the FAA to rescind the prohibition of supersonic flight in the U.S. over land, establishes noise-based certification standards, and repeals other regulatory barriers that have hindered faster-than-sound flight and related research for 52 years.

The order also instructs the FAA Administrator to develop standards for supersonic aircraft noise certification that takes into consideration acceptability in communities as well as economic reasonableness, and technological feasibility.

The President’s order also advances the coordination of research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts in supersonic flight through the National Science and Technology Council, with leadership provided from the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Lastly, it supports and promotes international engagement among the FAA and other agencies to align supersonic flight regulations globally and secure bilateral agreements for international operations.

The President’s executive order is just one example of his desire to ensure U.S. dominance in cutting edge technologies as well as prioritizing innovation and competitiveness on the global stage.

Other actions President Trump has taken include:

  • Executive Orders enhancing America’s global artificial intelligence (AI) dominance and advance AI education for America’s youth.
  • Multiple Executive Orders advancing nuclear technologies to ensure a reliable, clean, and affordable domestic energy supply.
  • Executive Order to restore Gold Standard Science as the cornerstone of Federal scientific research and ensure that Federal decision-making is informed by the most credible, reliable, and impartial scientific evidence available.
  • Prioritized deregulation to spur innovation and economic growth, including Executive Orders mandating the repeal of 10 regulations for each new one proposed, requiring the automatic rescission of outdated regulations, and eliminating anti-competitive regulations.
