Ukrainian Fighter Pilot Killed in Combat, F-16 Downed

F-16 Crashed During Russian Missile and Drone Attack

A Ukrainian Air Force F-16 pilot was killed in combat on August 26. Ukraine’s military announced three days later that it occurred during a Russian missile and drone attack. This accident is problematic for the nation on several levels. Oleksiy “Moonfish” Mes was reportedly one of Ukraine’s most skilled fighter pilots. He was the one of the first Ukrainian aviators to be trained in the F-16, with talent that carried until his death.

Drone Operator Violations Draw Big FAA Fines

Twenty-seven People Receive Notices Of Civil Penalties

The FAA has issued a total of $341,413 in fines to 27 people who violated regulations governing drone operations. Notifications of the fines were sent between October 2022 and June 2024. The hazards of flying drones unsafely or in an unauthorized manner have been identified and specified in detail in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) Part 107. Knowledge of the Part 107 regs is required and are included in the test for the Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.

Pilatus Expanding U.S. Operations

Sales And Service Facility Going Into Sarasota Airport

Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus announced its executives have signed a deal with the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (KSRQ) to construct a state-of-the-art sales and service facility on 17 acres on the north side of the airport. The new Customer Center will create about 50 jobs in aircraft sales, service, design, and delivery of Pilatus aircraft in the Southeastern U.S.

Aviation Maintenance Training Facility To Break Ground In October

Pierpont’s New A&P School Awaiting Final Details

Pierpont Community & Technical College in Fairmont, West Virginia, is planning to break ground on its new school to train aircraft airframe and powerplant maintenance technicians. A year ago, the school’s Aviation Maintenance Technology program received a $25 million supplemental appropriation during a special session of the state legislature to build the facility. The training facility will be built on the North Central West Virginia Airport (KCKB) in Clarksburg, about 12 miles south of the school.

Engine Experienced A Total Loss Of Power... The Propeller Continued To Windmill As He Attempted To Restart The Engine

On August 3, 2024, about 1245 Pacific daylight time, a Protech PT2, N657MJ , was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Lodi, California. The pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot, who held a student pilot certificate, stated that he maneuvered in the local area after departure.

It is a cooperative effort using the facilities and services of available Federal, state and local agencies. The U.S. Coast Guard is responsible for coordination of search and rescue for the Maritime Region, and the U.S. Air Force is responsible for search and rescue for the Inland Region. Information pertinent to search and rescue should be passed through any air traffic facility or be transmitted directly to the Rescue Coordination Center by telephone.
