Seven Killed, More Injured in Medical Jet Crash

Learjet 55 With Patient and Doctors On Board Goes Down in Philadelphia

A Learjet 55 medical jet crashed near a shopping mall in Philadelphia on Friday, January 31, killing all six on board and injuring several more on the ground. The aircraft was transporting a young patient back to Mexico after she completed her treatment at the Shriners Children's hospital.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the medical crew and pilots who were also lost in this tragic event - as well as all of the people who were affected on the ground - and we're thankful to the first responders for their quick action," Shriners stated.

The small jet, registered XA-UCI,  was a part of Florida-based Jet Rescue Air Ambulance’s fleet. It took off from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE) just after 6:00 pm on Friday carrying six occupants: two pilots, a doctor, a paramedic, a young female patient, and her mother. The flight has planned to make a fuel stop at Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF) in Missouri before continuing to Mexico’s Tijuana International Airport (TIJ).

However, only a minute after takeoff and amid being transferred to the departure frequency, the Learjet 55 entered a rapid descent at a maximum of 11,000 feet per minute. It crashed just after 6:00 pm near Cottman and Bustleton Avenues, across from the Roosevelt Mall and 2.5 nm from the airport.

All six of the Learjet’s occupants were killed as the aircraft collided with the ground and burst into flames. City officials stated that at least one person on the ground was killed and 19 more were injured due to the wreckage impacting cars, streets, and homes. Those injured were taken to Temple University Hospital for treatment, and at least six have been discharged.

Footage from the accident shows that the burning debris lit a nearby apartment on fire and crushed several vehicles. Blocks within roughly half a mile of the scene were blocked off from the public.

“I mourn the passing of six Mexicans in the aviation accident in Philadelphia, United States. Consular authorities are in constant contact with the families,” read a translated social media statement from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. “I’ve asked the Foreign Affairs Secretary to support whatever is needed. My solidarity with their loved ones and friends.”
