Airbus, AgustaWestland, Sikorsky Compete For Polish Military Contract

Have All Submitted Bids For Deal Estimated To Be Worth $3 Billion

Three helicopter giants have all submitted bids to replace Poland's fleet of aging, Soviet-era helicopters.

Airbus Helicopters, AgustaWestland, and Sikorsky have all jumped into the competition that will lead to a contract worth an estimated $3 billion to assemble 70 multi-purpose helicopters for the Polish army, according to a report from the French news service AFP.

Poland currently flies 250 helicopters left over from the former Soviet Union. The modernization is considered a significant step in that country's sweeping overhaul of its military equipment.

Both AgustaWestland and Sikorsky already have a helicopter manufacturing presence in Poland, and Airbus Helicopters has a plan in the works to set up a production facility there.

The contract is expected to be awarded in the second half of 2015.
