AMA Drone Report 10.12.17: NTSB--Drone v Blackhawk, City Drops Reg, DJI Privacy

Also: PassengerDrone, FAA Reauthorization Extension, UAS Pilot Certification, Workhorse Surefly

The NTSB is now offering public details of the alleged collision between a hobby drone and a US Army Blackhawk, including the fact that the drone pilot has been located... “The NTSB is investigating the Sept. 21 collision between a civilian drone and an Army UH-60 helicopter east of Staten Island, New York.

At approximately 7:20 p.m. Sept. 21, the drone, or unmanned aerial vehicle, and the helicopter collided.  The Army helicopter sustained damage to its main rotor blade, window frame and transmission deck.  A motor and arm from a small drone, identified as a DJI Phantom 4, were recovered from the helicopter. The NTSB was notified of the incident Sept. 22 and began its investigation that day... Two years ago, the town of Orchard Park, NY passed a local ordinance that applied largely to the area around New Era Field, the home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills. The town voted Wednesday night to begin the process of rescinding the local ordinance after it was informed that only the FAA has jurisdiction over navigable airspace. DJI has launched a new Local Data Mode that stops internet traffic to and from its DJI Pilot app, in order to provide enhanced data privacy assurances for sensitive government and enterprise customers. Local Data Mode will be available in the next update on the DJI Pilot app on CrystalSky and for select Android tablets. When an operator activates Local Data Mode, the app will stop sending or receiving any data over the internet. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
