Airport Officials Clear Woods To Decrease Deer Risk

Two Planes Collided With Deer In '03 And '04

Officials at the Akron/Canton Airport outside of Akron, OH told the Associated Press they plan to clear over 30 acres of woodland surrounding the airfield, all in hopes of reducing the risks of aircraft coming in contact with deer.

Sharpshooters have tried to cull the local cervine population, according to Airport Director Fred Krum, with negligible results. With the woods cut back, it is hoped the deer, no longer sheltered from hunters and the elements -- will move on to other areas far away from the busy airfield.

Authorities say two airplanes have collided with deer in the past three years, including a Canadair CL-600 that struck a deer as it was rotating for takeoff from the airport two years ago. The Comair regional jet was able to circle back to the airport and land safely.

The airport now needs approval of the plan from the Ohio State Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the US Army Corps of Engineers -- as the plan also involves filling in about 4 1/2 acres of wetlands, as well.

Of course, if clearing the woods doesn't work, KACK officials could always try an electrified mat to keep deer away...
