Another Trike Is Certified

Builder Will Use It To Learn How To Fly

An Antares MA-33 trike received amateur built-glider certification last Friday at the Flying H Farm near Libertytown (MD).

Eugene Breiner, the FAA Designated Airworthiness Representative, provided the glider/trike airworthiness certificate after a thorough inspection and review of the paperwork.

The Antares trike was built and is owned by Bill Eggbeer of Bethesda (MD). He'll take flight instruction in his glider/trike to obtain his private pilot certificate.  His instructor is John Ballantyne, the first person ever to obtain FAA commercial and flight instructor certificates by flying glider/trikes for his flight tests.

Upon receiving his private pilot-glider certificate, Bill will be authorized to fly solo or with a passenger for fun.

No FAA exemptions are involved

The operating limitations for his glider/trike permit Bill to fly over congested areas so long as an appropriate landing area could be reached in an emergency.

He can also fly at night so long as the glider/trike has proper aircraft lighting, may carry any amount of fuel, fly any distance and into any airspace with appropriate ATC permission, just as any other private pilot.

The Antares kit is the only trike on the FAA's 51% amateur built list. It is imported from the Ukraine and distributed in the US by Sergey Zozulya, owner of Antares Aircraft, and the late Mike Jacober, President of Artic Sparrow Aircraft, both based in Chugiak (AK).
