Fighters Escort Nigerian Cargo Plane After Radio Communications Lost

Plane Heading For Maintenance... Add One More Squawk To The List

Late Monday afternoon, F-16 fighters from March Air Reserve Base in California were scrambled to intercept a Nigerian 727 cargo jet, but not because of a security threat.

The FAA reportedly requested the intercept when the freighter lost all radio communication with air traffic control.

The Southern California Press Enterprise reported the plane was enroute for repairs at SoCal Precision Aircraft in San Bernardino, but lost all radio communication.

"They did have a hand-held radio, but apparently it failed, too," said Don Rogers, San Bernardino's interim airport director. "So there was no communication."

The Transportation Security Administration determined there was no security threat, but the fighters were launched to direct the 727 to the airport.

Michael Kucharek, a spokeman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado, told the paper NORAD has directed more than 2,400 intercepts in the years since 9/11 as part of Operation Noble Eagle.
