New British Government Scotches Third Runway At Heathrow

Will Also Not Consider Additional Runways At Gatwick, Stansted

The newly-elected coalition government of Great Britain says the controversial new runway at London's Heathrow airport should not be built, according to a joint policy agreement published Wednesday.

While the former Labour government re-stated its support for the third runway in the leadup to last week's national election, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats were opposed to the expansion plans.

The international news service AFP reports that the new government has also said it will not consider new runways at London's other two primary airports, Gatwick and Stansted.

Heathrow is the world's busiest international hub. Heathrow's residential neighbors has voiced strong opposition to the third runway, citing increased noise and air pollution.
