Pilot Shortage In The Future?

New Zealand To Cap Number Of Flight Students, Could Cause Shortage

Ahhh, the pendulum swings.

Down under in New Zealand, the government has capped the number of students who can attend commercial flight training for next year. Right away, the country's Aviation Industry Association predicted a looming shortage of pilots.

The AIA figures it this way: with the cap, only about 130 students will receive their commercial tickets next year. By 2007, the AIA believes there could be a shortage of pilots that would first make itself apparent in what the organization calls "low-end" business, such as sight-seeing.

Of those 130 graduates, many will find jobs outside of New Zealand. The question is, how to keep them in the country. So far, neither AIA nor civil aviation authorities in New Zealand have come up with an answer.
