Navy To Retire T-2 'Buckeye'

Has Served The Navy For 56 Years, Primarily As An Intermediate Trainer

The Navy's T-2 "Buckeye" airplane, which has been in service with the Navy for 56 years, is about to be retired.

The Buckeye has served primarily as the Navy's intermediate trainer, and is the airplane in which thousands of naval aviators made their first carrier landings. Now, with only a few left flying, the website jalopnik.com reports that the Navy's test and evaluation squadron VX-20 flew the last sortie with the Buckeye on Friday. The squadron has been flying three for the past few years, and they will be replaced by the C-38 Courier (Gulfstream G-100).

The Buckeye was replaced as a trainer by the T-45 Goshawk in 2008. There are still several T-2 Buckeyes registered as civilian airplanes, and they appear regularly at air shows around the country.
