MD Helicopters Offers MD530E Performance Upgrade

FAA Approved OEM Program Increases Power and Useful Load of Popular Model

MD Helicopters has developed a program to upgrade its popular, MD500E helicopter. The FAA approved program transforms the MD 500E into the more powerful and capable type-certified MD 530F.

The “E”-to-“F” conversion program consists primarily of: an engine swap from the Rolls Royce 250-C20B to the more powerful RR250-C30; new main and tail-rotor blades; and upgraded, “F” model, main-rotor gearbox and tail-rotor drive-shaft. The improvements facilitate a higher, 3,350 lbs. gross weight; increased cruise speed; and improved flight characteristics in confined areas. Converted aircraft leave MD’s Mesa facility with a zero-time engine for a fraction of the cost of a new helicopter, thereby saving operators the time and money of purchasing a new aircraft.

MD recently delivered one of the MD 530F conversion helicopters to Georgia-based HLH Aviation, which will utilize the aircraft in its power-line and vegetation management services.

MD 500E owners considering upgrading their helicopters may contact MD Helicopters for more information on the “E” to “F” conversion program.

Evolved from the Hughes 500—a civilian version of the US Army's OH-6A Cayuse/Loach—the MD500 series of light, utility, civilian and military helicopters comprises the MD 500E, MD 530F, and the NOTAR, MD 520N. Among the most well-known and ubiquitous of modern helicopters, the MD500 series is in service with a dozen militaries, to include those of Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, and the United States—which has fielded the aircraft in key engagements such as: Operation Credible Sport (Iran Hostage Crisis), Operation Urgent Fury (Invasion of Granada), the Iran-Iraq War, Operation Just Cause (Panama), the Iraq War, and the Global War on Terrorism.
