Australia Launches C-130J Hercules Safety Investigation

Move Follows Runway Excursion Incident In Kabul Thursday

The Royal Australian Air Force has commenced an investigation after a C-130J Hercules left the runway on landing at Kabul International Airport at about 1800 Australian Eastern Standard Time Thursday.

The aircraft stopped about 239 feet from the runway, but has since been towed to a safe area for examination as part of the investigation.

The Australian Ministry of Defense said in a news release that "safety is the most important priority for Air Force operations. Air Force aircraft are serviced and flown under a very strict and controlled airworthiness and safety system. All aircraft are under constant surveillance to ensure that they maintain the highest standards" and that there has been minimal impact to operations in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).
