Aero-TV: Catching Up On The World Of Mixed Reality Simulators

Quantum3D Aims To Change How You Flight Sim

Murat Kose, CEO of simulator specialist Quantum 3D, went over the basics of the biz with ANN’s Rex Alexander. For more than 25 years, Quantum 3D has provided simulation software for serious training and flight emulation. Today, their software serves as the underpinning for a long list of integrated training platforms, spanning simple tabletop trainers like the Redbird TD series all the way up to bespoke FFDs for Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and the like. That gives them a wide base to draw on when it comes to developing a high-fidelity rendition of real-world aircraft, even as they move onward into the future of eVTOL and AAM operations.

So what’s the most interesting thing coming down the pike? Kose says mixed reality is the most exciting, since it can provide a more encompassing, convincing simulation without all the costs of a full aircraft cabin. After plenty of testing with pure VR setups, Kose says, users almost unanimously preferred the mixed reality version, since they could still manipulate the switches, controls, and levers inherent to piloting.

The FAA hasn’t quite signed off on the new technology, though, but he says that FAA staff trying out the Mixed Reality system said it’s a “no-brainer” to use it for serious training. Good things are coming, Kose says, but “it’s going to be a little bit, but you’ll see significant progress in that space. We’ll see this as a certified and adopted, and accepted piece of equipment.”
