SpaceX Announces New Name For BFR

Second Stage Of The System Now Known As 'Starship'

Elon Musk has announced a new name for the spaceship/upper stage of the BFR: "Starship".

According to Engadget, Musk announced the name change in a Tweet. Initially, he Tweeted that plans for the BFR Starship are "accelerating as plans to make the Falcon 9 second stage reusable were being dropped.

A later Tweet offered some additional insight. "Technically, two parts: Starship is the spaceship/upper stage & Super Heavy is the rocket booster needed to escape Earth's deep gravity well (not needed for other planets of moons)."

At least one Twitter user responded that "Unless this "starship" is sent on a mission to another star system, it can't be called a starship." Musk responded "Later versions will."

When that might happen is a source for much speculation. However, Musk has been very open about his plans for the new spacecraft, including the establishment of bases on the Moon and Mars. He has also hinted that the rocket could be used for rapid trips between locations on Earth.
