Missouri Man Sentenced For Shooting At Airplane In 2014

Will Serve Six-And-A-Half Years In Federal Prison, Pay Restitution

Federal Judge Stephen R. Bough has sentenced 39-year-old David L. Dickenson to six and a half years in federal prison for shooting at an airplane that flew over his home in December 2014.

The aircraft was an ag plane that was conducting spraying operations over a nearby farm. The Joplin Globe reports that according to court documents, Dickenson "became angry" because the low-flying aircraft was preventing him from sleeping during the day. He took a 20-gauge shotgun outside his house and opened fire on the airplane.

The pilot was not injured, but the plane suffered damage to the engine cowling and horizontal stabilizer, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney's office in Springfield. The damage was not discovered until the plane landed.

Dickenson, of Miller, MO, pleaded guilty to destruction of an aircraft. Along with the prison term, he must pay $17,500 in restitution to the owner of the airplane.
