Airborne 02.26.18: Avidyne, Pilot Pension Restoration, USCG Rescues

Also: Bell Helicopter Rebrands, HondaJet 2017, PAZ Radar Satellite, Airlines Oppose Airport Tax

Avidyne Corporation has received FAA STC approval of their IFD Series of FMS/GPS/NAV/COM systems for installation in Robinson Helicopters.

This STC covers the IFD540 and IFD440 FMS/GPS/NAV/COMs as well as the IFD510 and IFD410 FMS/GPS standalone navigators, and allows for easy slide-in-replacement installations in Robinson helicopters that currently have legacy GNS navigators. This STC also covers green installations as well. Two pilots' unions are working to have the pensions restored for members flying for Delta and American Airlines, saying the carriers are now "flush with cash". Three major carriers in the U.S. have reported combined adjusted profits of about $47 billion over the past five years. And that has the unions looking at how to have the pensions restored for pilots who had them taken away during the wave of airline bankruptcies and mergers. But getting those pensions restored will not be easy, as they would represent a major expense for the airlines. The Coast Guard conducted two ice rescues on Saginaw Bay, last week, rescuing one man who had fallen through the ice while on an ATV, and another man who became stranded while ice fishing. The Coast Guard was contacted by Bay City emergency 911 stating that an ice fisherman, about two miles off of Pinconning State Park, heard someone screaming for help. The Coast Guard launched a Coast Guard Station Saginaw River ice rescue team and an Air Station Detroit aircrew. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
