Iberia Pilots Call One-Day Strike

First Of 30 Planned Actions To Protest Low-Cost Start-up Iberia Express

Pilots who fly for Spain's Iberia Airline called a one-day strike Monday, the first of 30 such labor actions the union plans to take in protest the start up of low-cost airline Iberia Express. The strike caused 150 Iberia flights to be grounded.

The pilot's union SELPA says the low-fare carrier is a threat to jobs, but the airline says it needs to budget airline to increase its profitability. Reuters reports that Iberia had petitioned the court to prevent its unions from striking. It had planned to seek compensation for 12 days of strikes which have taken place earlier this year.

SELPA says it is ready to negotiate, but the airline had not reached out to re-open negotiations. The union says as many as 8,000 jobs are at risk if the airline shifts airplanes from its main carrier to the low-cost start-up.

The pilots plan to strike every Monday and Friday until July. The airline says the one-day strikes will cost it over $3 million euros each.
