Friends Of Meigs On The March

Protest Planned For Tuesday Evening Park Meeting

Saying that the planning process for what was once Meigs Field is only a ruse to reach a pre-determined conclusion, the Friends Of Meigs takes to the streets Tuesday night, in a protest aimed at dramatizing "the unfairness of the process," according to a FOM email to ANN.

Specifically, FOM plans to descend en masse upon the Chicago Parks District Meigs Field Planning meeting at 1800 local, scheduled to take place at the South Shore Cultural Center.

Members say they're angry at the District's repeated statement, "We're not in the airport business," even though nine of the eleven members of the board seem openly in favor of reopening the airport.

Meigs Field was torn asunder in the dark of the night in March, 2003, when Mayor Richard Daley sent bulldozers and backhoes in to render the runway unusable.

Since then, Friends of Meigs has proposed creation of a "Planes and Parks" development, incorporating both an airport and the park that Daley said should take its place.

Friends of Meigs asks those who plan to attend the protest Tuesday night contact the organization so leaders can adequately prepare for the crowd.
