Aero-TV: Making Good Planes Better -- Micro VGs Offer Aerodynamic Enhancements

Vortex Generators Can Radically Improve Many Airframes VERY Cost-Effectively

While at the AOPA 2013 convention, ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell had a chance to talk with Anni Brogan the President of Micro Aerodynamics Incorporated.

Micro Aerodynamics develops and produces vortex generators for various functions on numerous aircraft make and models. In this video, Brogan explains how the vortex generator works and how it does more than we may think it does.

It’s common to see vortex generators on the leading edge of a wing and we usually associate this with reducing the stall speed. Brogan explains that stall speed adjustment through the use of vortex generators can be important, but they also can do more than that. Vortex generators can improve controllability and adjust the effectiveness of controls. For example, she points out that vortex generators applied to the rudder of a multiengine airplane can reduce the VMC speed.

Brogan’s description of how the vortex generators work, how they are certified, and how they are tested and installed is interesting and informative. With this video you also get an informative mini-lesson in aerodynamics.
