Woman Jailed For Aiming A Laser At A Border Patrol Helicopter

Said She Didn't Think The Beam Would Reach 'That Far'

A woman in Brownsville, TX was arrested and held for nine hours Sunday after she aimed a laser pointer at an airborne Border Patrol helicopter.

The woman, 20-year-old Yesenia Lisbeth Diaz said that she didn't think the beam would reach the flying helicopter.

The Brownsville Herald reports that authorities received a report from Border Patrol agents that someone had targeted one if its helos with a laser beam. Police spokesman J.J. Trevino said the air crew could tell where the beam was originating, and when police arrived at Diaz' home at about 3:00 am, she admitted to shining the beam at the aircraft, but said she didn't think it would reach that far.

Diaz was charged with one count of illuminating an aircraft with a laser pointer, a Class C misdemeanor.
