Four Injured In Hot-Air Balloon Explosion

Accident Occurred Near Temecula, CA Saturday

An explosion aboard a hot-air balloon Saturday sent three people to hospitals, while two aboard the aircraft escaped serious injury.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the explosion happened shortly after the balloon landed near Temecula, CA early Saturday morning. Two of the passengers were transported to trauma centers, and a third was sent to a burn center. A fourth person aboard the aircraft suffered minor injuries, and a fifth was reportedly uninjured.

Riverside County Fire Department spokesman Mark Annas said the balloon appeared to land normally, but then the explosion occurred. Mydesert.com reports that the explosion appeared to have occurred in the gondola.

The balloon came down at an intersection of two roads in Temecula's wine region. It was not immediately clear why the balloon had to land.

The accident is under investigation.
